Town Centre Living

Increasing the number of people living in town centres is a key part of creating vibrant, resilient places. A stronger residential population supports local services and businesses, increases footfall and activity, and helps to bring vacant and underused buildings back into productive use. Opportunities range from converting upper floors above shops into homes to redeveloping vacant sites and repurposing historic buildings.

Many towns have successfully delivered town centre housing through partnerships between local authorities, housing associations and private developers. Although the conversion of existing buildings can involve higher upfront costs than new-build development, the benefits for heritage, sustainability, place quality and community wealth building can make these projects particularly valuable and help attract additional funding and support.
