Active travel

Active travel is key to increasing accessibility, boosting local economic activity, improving public health, enhancing environmental sustainability, and creating more vibrant, people centred places.

By shifting the focus from vehicle movement to people and place, active travel helps transform town centres into destinations where people want to visit, spend time, and invest.

There are many ways that towns can encourage and support more sustainable travel choices. This is not about banning cars from town centres. Many people rely on cars and may have limited alternative transport options. However, the compact nature of many Scottish towns means that more everyday journeys could be made on foot, by wheel or by bike if routes were safer, more accessible and more convenient.
